The Virtual Reality Modeling Language, more commonly referred to as VRML, is the original and most popular form of Web3D. As a 3D scene description language and file format that together allow encoding and encapsulation of 3D content for the Internet, VRML pioneered the concept of Web3D years before the term Web3D itself emerged to describe such technologies.

This chapter will give you a general overview of VRML. Here you will learn where VRML came from, what versions are available and under development, and the basic jargon used to describe common aspects of the technology. You'll also explore the innards of a simple VRML file in preparation for learning in later chapters how to customize existing VRML content using the VRML programming language.
