Java Media Family

Java 3D is part of Sun's Java Media family. Java Media is a collection of media-oriented APIs that extend Java with advanced multimedia capabilities not found in the core Java APIs. As a member of the Java Media family, Java3D's siblings include:

  • Java 2D: Extends Java's Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT) with advanced two-dimensional imaging capabilities that allow developers to draw with enhanced lines, colors, image transforms, and omposites.

  • Java Advanced Imaging: Supports a variety of image-processing techniques, such as scaling, cropping, warping, distorting, and image enhancement.

  • Java Media Framework: Allows developers to create and use media players, media capture utilities, and media conferencing tools.

  • Java Shared Data Toolkit: Supports interactive communications over a variety of networks, including collaborative whiteboards, multiuser chats, and shared document editing.

  • Java Sound: Extends Java's basic sound-playing capabilities, with low-level audio features including audio mixing, audio capture, MIDI sequencing, and MIDI synthesis.

  • Java Speech: Allows Java programs to support both speech recognition and speech synthesis.

  • Java Telephony: Integrates telephones with computers, allowing programmatic control of telephones through Java.
