Chapter 2. OVERVIEW OF WEB3D > Web3D Consortium

Web3D Consortium

The Web3D Consortium is a nonprofit organization that at the time of this writing consists of more than 50 leading high-technology companies, such as Apple, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Silicon Graphics, Sun, and Sony, just to name a few. Through the Web3D Consortium, whose home on the Web is seen in Figure 2-1, members work together to design, develop, and promote a suite of open, interoperable, and standardized technologies known collectively as Web3D.

The Web3D Consortium drew its first breath in December 1998. As a nonprofit organization whose charter is to establish a suite of compatible 3D standards for the Internet, it is a direct outgrowth of the VRML Consortium, which was founded in 1996 to shepherd the development, evolution, and standardization of VRML alone.
