Appendix F. Other 3D Technologies for the Web

Appendix F. Other 3D Technologies for the Web

VRML, Java 3D, MPEG-4, and X3D are far from being the only 3D technologies for the Web, although they're arguably the most significant. Both VRML and MPEG-4 are already ISO/IEC international standards, and X3D should become an international standard after the final specification is produced. Java 3D's opportunity for standardization, meanwhile, is closely tied to Java's potential standardization.

There are, however, many other forms of 3D for the Web. Following are just a few of these technologies (assembled from a discussion started by Cindy Ballreich on the www-vrml discussion list and a number of sites compiled by Core Web3D contributing author Bob Crispen). These and many more can be found on the 3D Engines list at http://cg.cs.tu-berlin.de/~ki/engines.html. 3D Engines has been around as nearly as long as the Web itself, and it features a comprehensive listing of many different forms of 3D (a variety of software, hardware, Web-based, and stand-alone 3D technologies can be found here).
