MPEG-2: Generic Coding of Moving Pictures and Audio

Development of the second MPEG project, MPEG-2, started in July 1990 and was standardized by ISO/IEC in November 1994 (MPEG-2 is ISO/IEC international standard 13818). The main goal was to migrate television from analog to digital with composite quality at 6 Mbps, component quality at 9 Mbps, multichannel audio coding, and multiprogram transport.

The MPEG-2 standard addresses the combining of one or more elementary streams of video and audio, as well as other data, into single or multiple streams which are suitable for storage or transmission. These capabilities are specified in two forms: the Program Stream and the Transport Stream.
