Chapter 16. MPEG-4 OVERVIEW > Fundamental Concepts

Fundamental Concepts

MPEG-4 is the first standard that views multimedia content as a set of audio-visual objects that are presented, manipulated, and transported individually. It shares fundamental concepts with previous MPEG standards that we will review.

Audio or video entities that participate as individual elements in a scene are termed audiovisual objects. Such objects can be either natural or synthetic. Natural objects are time-variant data and are conveyed separately in different channels or streams. Throughout this and subsequent chapters the term media stream is used to describe any type of elementary audiovisual stream in the MPEG-4 system.
