A Crash Course on Quantization

This section describes uniform linear scalar quantization, as it is the type used in BIFS. Other types of quantization that may be used in MPEG-4 streams won't be reviewed. For detailed information, refer to the literature referenced in Appendix D, "MPEG-4 Resources."

In many lossy compression applications, each source output x is represented using one of a small number of code words y (Figure 17-5). The number of possible distinct source output values is generally much greater than the number of codewords available to represent them. The process of representing a large—possibly infinite—set of values with a much smaller set is called quantization.
