Part 4: MPEG-4/BIFS > CUSTOMIZING VRML FOR BIFS

Chapter 19. CUSTOMIZING VRML FOR BIFS

Topics in This Chapter

  • How to convert VRML contents to BIFS

  • Enhancing the content

  • What's next?

In the previous chapters you were introduced to MPEG-4 Binary Format for Scenes (BIFS) and its two protocols: BIFS-Commands and BIFS-Anim. The binary formats were described and some techniques for using these protocols were discussed. In this chapter you will learn how to use ex-isting VRML content with MPEG-4, by converting it to BIFS. VRML content can be converted to BIFS protocols to take advantage of the compression schemes. However, higher compression rates can be achieved at the cost of introducing a small, unnoticeable error in the original values. This powerful concept is the whole idea behind using quantization. Here you will learn how to optimize the encoding presented in previous chapters. Algorithms will be presented to automate usage of quantization from a few user-provided parameters. The last part of the chapter gives examples of cus-tomization of VRML contents with BIFS functionalities.
