The preceding chapter introduced MPEG standards and revealed the fundamental concepts of MPEG-4. This chapter presents the MPEG-4 scene description mechanism known as the Binary Format for Scenes (BIFS). While very similar in syntax and functionalities to VRML97, from which it is derived, BIFS is also quite unique in many ways, as you'll soon see.
