Part 4: MPEG-4/BIFS > MPEG-4 OVERVIEW

Chapter 16. MPEG-4 OVERVIEW

Topics in This Chapter

  • An Introduction to MPEG

  • Fundamental MPEG concepts

  • An overview of the MPEG-4 standard

In Part 2, "Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML)," you learned the fundamentals of this language and how the scene-graph data structure is used by VRML programmers to represent a 3D world. Here, you'll learn about a new standard adopted by ISO (International Standard Organization) called MPEG-4.

It is assumed that you are familiar now with VRML concepts developed in the previous part—in particular the scene-graph structure of a VRML scene as well as the event-routing mechanism. This part overviews MPEG standards and focuses on the last one to be released: MPEG-4. Next the binary scene composition will be discussed, and finally, you will learn how to create more dynamic content with MPEG-J, a Java interface extending the concepts of EAI.

This chapter begins with a brief introduction to fundamental concepts and to some terms that are used throughout the MPEG specifications and in this part of the book, then gives a general overview of MPEG standards with focus on MPEG-4 standard. You will learn the necessary jargon to understand MPEG standard as well as the fundamental concepts underlying this technology.
