Summary

Java 3D is a standard Java 2 platform extension ("optional package") that allows developers to construct comprehensive, platform-independent applets and applications. Featuring interactive 3D graphics, behaviors, and spatialized sound capabilities, Java 3D can be integrated with standard Java programs and vice versa.

As a layered API, the high-level Java 3D API sits atop low-level 3D graphics APIs such as OpenGL and Direct3D. Like VRML, Java 3D is based on a scene graph programming model. Developers use Java 3D classes to construct scene graphs in terms of nodes, which ultimately define a virtual universe (the equivalent of a VRML world). Unlike VRML, however, Java 3D is tied to the object-oriented language of Java. Because Java 3D is based on Java, developers can exert a great deal of programmatic control over the virtual worlds they construct.
