Chapter 11. JAVA 3D OVERVIEW > Key Java 3D Features

Key Java 3D Features

Although Java 3D is fundamentally a programming interface to a comprehensive library of compiled 3D classes, which is quite different from VRML's text-file format and scene description language, the two have a good deal in common. Because VRML inspired the design and development of Java 3D, the two technologies have feature sets that are described in similar terms, as the following sections explain.

Of course, Java 3D and VRML aren't identical twins; they're different in as many ways as they are similar. They are, ultimately, two different approaches to interactive 3D. In the sections that follow you'll learn about the key features of Java 3D, how it resembles VRML, and how it stands on its own as a 3D development API.
