Summary

VRML97 was designed with modularity and composability in mind. Using the Inline node, you can compose very sophisticated worlds using premade content that resides in its own file. Inline nodes can be set as the child of a Transform node, allowing you to position, rotate, and scale the inlined content in a manner that is meaningful to your world. Files containing inlined content can themselves be inlined, allowing so-called "nesting" of inlined files.

The PROTO mechanism (short for prototype) gives developers a way to construct custom nodes that extend the base VRML language. Using the corresponding EXTENDPROTO mechanism, you can use externally defined PROTO nodes in your own worlds. In addition, you can inline VRML files that contain instances of prototype nodes. Thanks to inlining and prototypes, modular, reusable libraries of VRML code are possible.
