The BIFS-Anim Protocol

BIFS-Anim is a streaming protocol. It behaves like a video or audio streaming protocol: a header (the anim mask) is first sent to configure the BIFS-Anim decoder, then frames are sent at a specified frame rate. Frames contain values for fields that have been declared animated in the mask and that are animated in these frames.

While BIFS-Anim and BIFS-Command seem to be two different protocols, they both use the same BIFS decoder: the mask is stored in the BIFS-Command decoder. It will serve to configure a BIFS-Anim decoder to which the animation stream will be attached (Figure 18-1). One can view the BIFS-Anim process as a special case of FieldReplacement command, replacing values of any kind of field except SF/MFNode, SF/MFUrl, SF/MFString, SF/MFScript, SFCommandBuffer, SFImage, and SFBuffer.
