Behavior

A standard object model (the W3C DOM at http://www.w3.org/DOM/DOMTR#dom1) works with CSS, XHTML, and ECMAScript 262 (http://www.ecma.ch/ecma1/STAND/ECMA-262.HTM), the standard version of JavaScript, enabling you to create sophisticated behaviors and effects that work across multiple platforms and browsers. No more Netscape-only JavaScript. No more IE/Windows-only ActiveX and JScript (as described in Chapter 1, “99.9% of Websites Are Obsolete”).

Depending on the site's goals and audience, designers and developers can seize all the power of web standards by fully separating structure from presentation and behavior. Or they might choose to create transitional sites combining old and new—for instance, blending simple XHTML table layouts with CSS control of typography, margins, leading, and colors.
