How Do I Code Thee? Let Me Count the Ways.

There was DHTML for Netscape 4. There was incompatible DHTML for Internet Explorer 4, which pretty much only worked in Windows. There was non-DHTML JavaScript for Netscape 3 and non-DHTML Microsoft code for IE3. There might be additional code for off-brand and earlier browsers, or there might not be. In short, even the least interesting web page required more forks than a spaghetti restaurant.

Some developers limited themselves to two versions (one for IE4, and the other for Netscape 4) and demanded visitors get a 4.0 browser or get lost. Others, with smaller budgets, bet everything on one browser and generally lost that bet (if not their shirts).
