Chapter Thirteen. Working with Browsers ... > Usable Type: The Quest Continues

Usable Type: The Quest Continues

Thirteen years into the web's maturation as a medium, there is no way to set type that reliably and consistently delivers both the control designers require and the freedom users need to change a design's initial size values. There would be a way if IE/Windows permitted users to resize text set in pixels, as IE5/Macintosh, Mozilla, Netscape, Navigator, and Kmeleon have done for three years and Opera has done forever. But Moby (the techno guy, not the white whale) will grow hair before Microsoft brings this technology it invented to its Windows client.

This is not a standards problem. Text zoom falls outside the parameters of CSS or any other web standard. There is no specification and no law that says users must be able to scale text on web pages. Common sense says that, but common sense is not a standard.
