Chapter Fourteen. Accessibility Basics > Arriving at a Tabbing Order

Arriving at a Tabbing Order

Figure 14.11 shows the old hybrid site and indicates the tabbing order prior to our use of tabindex. When users pressed the Tab key, they moved dully from one link to the next in the order in which the links occurred in markup. This was the expected (and excruciating) default behavior. Figure 14.12 shows the revised order made possible by tabindex, wherein each stroke of the tab key shuttles the user to a place they might actually want to go. The numbers shown have been superimposed over the screen shots to indicate tab order; they do not appear on the actual site.

14.11. The hybrid Zeldman site prior to revising the tabbing order via tabindex: As visitors hit the Tab key, they move dully from one link to the next in the order in which links occur in markup (www.zeldman.com). The shown numbers are not part of the site's imagery. They have been superimposed to illustrate the default tab order sequence.
