Twice-Cooked Satay: Embedding Multimedia While Supporting Standards

In November 2002, Drew McLellan of Dreamweaverfever.com and The Web Standards Project conducted an experiment. In an article for A List Apart magazine, Drew discarded the bloated, invalid markup universally used to embed Flash content in web pages, replacing it with lean, compliant XHTML (http://www.alistapart.com/stories/flashsatay/). He threw away the invalid <embed> element altogether and replaced cumbersome IE-style markup such as this:
