Sniffing Oblivion: The Wrong Reaction to the Change in Browsers

Users who switched to smaller-than-standard type were simply making themselves more comfortable. They were not the only ones to miss the point of a standard size, nor should they have been expected to understand it. Many web professionals also missed the point, in part because Netscape and Microsoft did not publicize it.

In particular, the Browser Quirks Brigade, who had come to believe that browsers would always differ greatly in appearance and behavior and that the way to solve these differences was to combine browser detection with code forks and tag soup, quickly did what they had been trained to do.
