Additional Uses of Fahrner Image Replacement (FIR)

Fahrner's “Look, Ma, no IMG tags” technique can be used many ways. For instance, you could use it to insert an ultra-wide image in the center of a liquid layout. As the visitor widened her browser window, more of the image would be revealed. Back at the ranch (that is, elsewhere in our zeldman.com CSS redesign), we use the technique to create the appearance of three banners, with rollover effects not only on the images, but also on their borders [16.7].
