Chapter 6. Moderation, Karma, and Flame ... > Moderation, Meta-moderation, and Kar...

Moderation, Meta-moderation, and Karmic Justice

But the real poster child of user-controlled moderation is a site called Slashdot (slashdot.org). Started by Rob Malda in 1997, Slashdot’s slogan, “news for nerds, stuff that matters,” has become a rallying cry for the open source geek community. Slashdot has gone from being a pet project to a full-fledged business, and turned Malda into a minor celebrity. The site is so active (it serves more than a million pages a day), that it’s given rise to a new term. When a Slashdot story links to your site, you have been “slashdotted.” Congratulations! But enjoy it while you can, because slashdotted sites usually choke on all the traffic, sometimes going offline altogether.
