Tie the Virtual to the Real as Much as Possible

Like the Twilight Zone example previously mentioned, the core problem with most virtual communities is their separation from real-world consequences. When users feel that they can get away with murder in a virtual space, they may try to do just that.

The solution is to tie your community to the real world as much as possible. One way to do this is to require users to create a membership before posting to your site. Make some information mandatory in the sign-up process. Community members will think twice about making trouble if they know that the site administrator has their name and email address on file. And though names can be faked and email addresses can be had on the web for free at any number of sites, requiring that information helps create a more stable, responsible atmosphere.
