Rule #1: Tie Content Directly to Community

The last chapter discussed the idea of content—now you need to structure that content with your community in mind. The best single thing you can do to create active discussions on your site is to tie your community features to your content as much as possible, visually and architecturally.

The two-tree theory

You’re familiar with the typical visualization of a sitemap, where the homepage is at the top and the subpages fall beneath like roots of a tree. Imagine planting one tree called “content” and one called “community” right next to each other. This is the typical, and most infuriating, mistake that community sites make. I call this the “two-tree theory.”
