The Nuts and Bolts

I promised you that I wouldn’t give you a list of design rules, and I won’t. Instead, here are a few design guidelines—things to think about in the design process.

1. Design for your audience

Since the only thing you can count on in web design is that “it depends,” it helps to narrow the scope of whom you’re designing for. Identify and profile your audience before you even start the visual design process. Who are these people? What do they like? What kinds of objects surround them in their daily life? Drawing inspiration from these things will help you design a site that resonates with your audience.
