Intimacy Doesn’t Mean Sex (Usually)

First of all, let me define the terms. When I talk about intimacy, I’m not talking about sex. Nor do I mean revealing personal trivia in a diary or smiling coyly into a webcam. Though all of these things can be elements of creating an intimate community space, none of them are intimate by default.

By intimacy, I mean that feeling you get when you realize that someone is speaking directly to you, telling you something personal that resonates deeply. I’m talking about spaces where that kind of intimate exchange can take place safely and without fear, like my exchange with Mac in college.
