Barriers to entry can also become more lenient over time. I’ve personally experienced a kind of stifling in communities that erect their barriers too high, too soon.

I was once part of an email list community that formed around the common interests of a few real-world friends. Since the list was formed out of our mutual real-world friendships, it made sense to simply set the barrier to entry at the friendship level. In other words, you had to be a friend to join. Simple, right?
