Barriers Can Change Over Time

Both of these stories also illustrate another important idea— barriers to entry do not need to be fixed in one specific place. In fact, it can be good to adjust them over time, in response to the changing needs of your community.

A fledgling community may require a low barrier to entry in order to attract users and gain momentum. Once a critical mass of users has arrived, it may make sense to raise the bar and make your barrier to entry more difficult. Adding more required information to the sign-up process or imposing a registration, for example, would be ways to raise the bar. In many cases, after a few months of cultivating a community, you’ll see how you need to filter your users. Often, the changes needed practically present themselves.
