Chapter 22. User Customization > Persisting Application States

Persisting Application States

In addition to allowing users to customize the visual appearance of your applications, you may want to maintain information regarding their recent activity, and the state of the application when they exited it. I'm not talking about anything Orwellian here, simply about maintaining an MRU (“most recently used”) list or perhaps restoring any windows that were open when the user exited the application.

Database applications rarely use operating system files in the sense that, say, a word processing application does, but it's quite reasonable to list the last few rows for which a user has searched. The mechanism for doing this isn't difficult.
