Providing Passive Assistance

As we've seen, passive user assistance mechanisms are a part of the application that are simply there; the user doesn't need to take any action to access them. In a sense, the entire user interface is a passive user assistance mechanism: the labels of controls and commands, even the structure of the application itself.

But that definition is too big and too vague for our purposes, so we'll restrict our discussion of passive user assistance mechanisms to those widgets whose primary function is to provide additional information to the user, specifically ToolTip and StatusBar widgets.
