Families and Faces and Fonts (oh my)

I've been throwing the terms “typeface” and “font” around without defining them, but of course, these terms have specific, technical meanings.

A set of letters that have essentially the same characteristics is referred to by typographers as a type family, and in computer typography as a font family. Times New Roman and Helvetica are both type families.
