Chapter 20. Reporting > Managing Reports

Managing Reports

In addition to the data and layout design of a report, you also need to think carefully about how you will make the report available to the user. There are essentially three ways of making reports available: on demand, periodically, or as part of a work process. Of course, any given report may be available in multiple ways. In fact, as we'll see in a moment, most work process and periodic reports should also be available on an ad hoc basis.

Most of the “data entry receipt” type of reports that duplicate a data entry form (perhaps in a different format) form part of a work process: Enter the order, print it, and then give one copy to the customer and one to shipping. Ideally, one would like to automate the production of these reports. After the order is saved, for example, the application would send it to the printer without further action on the user's part.
