Chapter 14. Grid Controls > Using Grid Controls

Using Grid Controls

Like the list controls we examined in the last chapter, the grid controls are most often used to display the many-side attributes of rows in a one-to-many relationship, but either can be used whenever you need to display multiple rows from a single entity. The primary difference, of course, is that the grid controls can display multiple attributes, whereas the list controls typically only display a single value.

The same basic rule applies to using grid controls as to list controls: Don't swamp your user. Because both the ListView and the DataGrid support sorting the rows displayed, the upper limit of items that can be comfortably displayed is much higher than with, say, a ListBox, but you should still be careful about displaying any more information than is required, and useful, to the user at that moment. It's still unwise to slap the entire contents of a DataTable into a grid control and leave the users to fend for themselves.
