Panel Structures

Having grouped your data in a way that is both logical and supports the users' work processes (or at least having gotten as close to this ideal as you can reasonably aspire), you can turn to the actual form layouts. Complex forms typically fall into one of two basic categories: panel structures, which we'll discuss in this section, and coordinated structures, which we'll examine in the next.

Of course, it's the nature of the written word that I'm presenting grouping and designing as if they were sequential tasks. In reality, the process is iterative—you'll do some attribute groupings, try some layouts, fiddle with the groupings, play with the forms some more… you'll just have to trust in the process; you will get a good result. Eventually.
