Making the Change

There is no way to institutionalize usability without making waves. The design of user interfaces is likely to be an emotional issue for a number of people because they have serious time and ego investments in the way design has been done in the past. In many organizations, user interface design has occurred by a political process that has little to do with user needs but requires a lot of effort put into negotiation and power balancing. The group members who created this delicate compromise will probably resist change.

As the application development community moves towards a systematic usability engineering process, there will be resistance. People will fear that their work isn't valued, and they may exhibit defensive behavior. It is important to let these feelings surface and to confront them directly. To reduce resistance, introduce usability practices as new technology and present them like any other new initiative.
