Chapter 12. Staffing > The Central Usability Organization Manager

The Central Usability Organization Manager

The executive champion or the chief user experience executive provides high-level strategy and support. This role is essential, but the daily work falls under the control of the manager of the central usability organization, who has a very different job than that of the executives. The role requires at least a good understanding of usability technology, along with very good connections in the organization. While the executive might spend a small part of his or her time on usability, the central usability organization manager is fully dedicated to the control and promotion of the usability engineering capability within the organization.

The central usability group has a whole agenda of projects and services for which the executive champion may provide overall direction, but the manager has to plan, fund, staff, and monitor each one. This is a lot like running an internal consulting group—there is an infrastructure to maintain and a set of project offerings to design, create, market, and deliver.
