Expectations

Once the showcase has been selected according to the criteria outlined in this chapter and properly staffed, the project is set up to succeed. The team members will follow the methodology and apply the standards, templates, and tools. Like test pilots, they will find things that do not work properly, and they will usually be able to manage the situation before there is a major crash.

The showcase team has a lot to manage. The project must continue with excellence as a demonstration of proper practice, use of the infrastructure, and the value of usability work. The methodology and standards must be fine-tuned. The communication links and organizational buy-in must be achieved. This is all a tall order. But the success of the showcase is essential to the continuation of institutionalization. You may have a beautiful aircraft on the drawing board, but a crash by the test pilot will certainly prevent immediate acceptance of the design.
