Chapter 13. Projects > Doing It Right

Doing It Right

Assuming you have established the methodology, infrastructure, organization, and staffing and have engineered an acceptance of usability, it is now time to begin the routine application of usability engineering in your projects.

A mature usability process has many key hallmarks. Usability work starts very early in the development cycle, and there is no thought of having untrained technical staff develop a user interface and then test it, with the resulting frantic attempts to repair the flawed design. Instead, the usability process automatically starts as soon as the business need and strategy are identified. The usability practitioners—the leads on the project during the early stages—ensure that the strategy is refined and fully reflected in the actual site or application. The usability staff harmonizes the needs of the organization with the realities of user needs and limitations, creating a user interface structure that makes the navigation simple and straightforward.
