Chapter 12. Staffing

  • The manager of the central usability group is the day-to-day leader of the central organization and also manages the overall progress of usability in the company. It is better to have a good manager without much usability experience than a usability expert who does not understand management.

  • The central usability group needs usability professionals who play a number of types of roles. You may need to staff all of these roles:

    • Internal consultant

    • Documenter

    • Specialist

    • Researcher

  • Usability practitioners do the actual usability work—they are generalists in usability engineering with a solid skill set for doing the design process. In small companies, they may be a part of the central usability organization. In larger companies, they should generally report to the project teams within each line of business.

  • Using an offshore model is a potential partial solution for almost any organization building its usability staff.
