Chapter 14. Activities of the Established Usability Group

  • The central group is responsible for the overall usability initiative in the organization. Keep usability vibrant, effective, and respected.

    • Don't be marginalized, ignored, or diverted back to a technology focus.

    • Maintain momentum by planning the work for excitement and visible progress.

    • Evangelize usability by constantly hosting events to share the lessons learned and convey excitement about the value of usability.

    • Train the new people to keep the knowledge of user-centered design in your organization. Also, enhance and update the skill sets of existing staff.

    • Mentor the usability staff working for the project teams.

    • Update the design standard and provide consultation to help developers follow the rules.

    • Form a community of interest. Support formal activities, such as information sharing sessions, that provide mutual emotional support.

    • Conduct usability tests objectively, as outsiders to the project team.

    • Measure usability to show your investment is working and highlight areas for improvement.

    • Take responsibility for usability throughout the organization.

    • Report your progress and achievements to executives.
