Mentoring

The usability staff members working on the project teams have a “dotted line” relationship with the central group. This means that the central group cares about them and is there to advocate for them in politics and policy and to help handle problems. But most directly, the central group should be there to mentor the usability staff on the project teams. Depending on the corporate culture, this might be either a very formal process or an informal one.

The mentoring job is challenging because there is no single path of mentoring needed. Some staff members need insights into data gathering methods, some need to build confidence so they can run their first solo usability test, and others need help interacting with developers.
