Maintaining Momentum

It is critical to keep momentum at a rate that is motivating for the usability staff and development team. The usability effort does not need to be too aggressive. Companies that mandate usability and try to implement it instantly do not do well. It takes time to disseminate usability into the organization, but there must be forward movement.

One trick is to initially keep the effort focused on smaller projects. Even if resources are limited, you can make one or two projects into showcases. In this way, even a small commitment is visible and motivating. After allowing time for percolation, you can start to tackle larger projects. Make sure you don't have a few practitioners trying to work on too many projects. If you have a small amount of staff applied to a huge organization, your efforts will be invisible, and you will lose momentum.
