Design Guidelines

To maximize the usability of Web sites for older users, designers must capitalize and stay current on the existing knowledge base about age-related motor, perceptual, and cognitive changes. The preceding research provides the basis for the following design guidelines.

Age-related declines in movement control may be minimized with an adaptive interface. For example, older adults benefit from having a lower mouse movement ratio (Walker, et al., 1996), suggesting that adjusting the acceleration of the mouse would be an easy way to improve computer usability for older adults.
