Chapter 10. From Desktops to Handhelds > Information Presentation

Information Presentation

Users of mobile devices want instant access to information. They do not want to wait until they get back to their fixed-location computer in the office or the home. Hand Web users need data that are easily accessible on a small screen space, can be read or viewed immediately, are presented in cohesive and complete chunks, and are contextually meaningful.

We need to devise solutions for maximizing the use of small-screen space for the user to view textual information. Several strategies can achieve this. First, there is the use of browsers that allow focus + context techniques (Robertson and Mackinlay, 1993; Holmquist, 1997; Fisher, et al., 1997). These techniques employ the notion that as people view content, they need to be able to focus on targeted information in context. This is particularly important for small displays.
