Genre Mixing

Web genres differ sufficiently in content, expression, and form that the effort it takes to recognize them and distinguish between them is relatively small. As mentioned earlier, two genre styles that we can easily distinguish from one another are online news and e-shopping. Both have special properties borrowed from their physical-world equivalents that permit their visitors to identify them.

A number of studies have investigated the usability of Web page designs (Borges, et al., 1998; Grose, et al., 1998; Vora, 1998; Gehrke and Turban, 1999), and the Web genre that has most often been the critical focus of usability studies and guideline recommendations is the shopping genre (Weise, 2000; Hurst, 2000; Nielsen and Tahir, 2001). Nielsen and Tahir propose 222 usability guidelines for designing a shopping site, including some based on real-world equivalents.
