Genre Expression

The expression of a genre is the way content providers communicate with their target audience. Content may be “expressed” via text, graphics, sound, voice, animation, or other modes. In thinking of a specific genre, one of the first properties to come to mind is the style of expression. How is the content being expressed? Is the information expressed through pictures or by text? If pictures are the means of expression, is the depiction one of stylized images, abstract drawings, or photographs?

How a person expresses his or her ideas in communication venues such as lectures or conversations defines that individual's “communicating character.” A speaker's face, gestures, and voice intonation represent some of the external behavior that the audience assimilates as part of the expressive component of the speaker's message. The expression embodied in the person's external behavior, not just the spoken words, is what creates a unique identity.
