Acknowledgments

The ideas and insights in this book have been enriched by my own teachers, wonderful professional colleagues, consulting clients, and the many students who have been part of my academic career. I thank only a few of them here by name, but I am grateful to all of them.

My mentor and friend, the late Manfred Kochen, inspired in me a passion for scholarship and interdisciplinary curiosity that remains to this day.

John Stasko, Mark Guzdial, Jay Bolter, and Gregory Abowd graciously reviewed one or more versions of the manuscript and provided constructive comments. I am especially indebted to my friend and colleague Jim Foley for providing constructive comments and for writing the Foreword. I want to acknowledge Wendy Rogers, the primary author on Chapter 5, and Kayt Sukel, who helped me write Chapter 10.

I am immensely grateful to freelance editor Marian Gordin. The first question that Marian asked me when I met her was, “Who is the audience for this book?” The moment she asked that question, I was confident that she spoke my language. When I began getting her detailed edits, I saw her remarkable ability to take lengthy, wordy sentences and turn them into succinct prose.

I am deeply indebted to Julie Shinabery for taking on the incredibly laborious task of securing permissions for some 65 figures. Also, with unwavering attention to detail, she made sure that all the figures, illustrations, tables, and screenshots were properly prepared for the publisher. I am also grateful to Sarah Craighill for preparing the illustrations for several of the figures and for commenting on early versions of some of the chapters.

My deepest thanks go to my son, David, with whom I had many early discussions, and who read and critiqued parts of the work, as well as to my wife, Barbara. She was my art adviser and drew the ballerina illustrations, and she also engaged me in discussions that helped to sharpen my presentation of key concepts. I would like to thank the Addison-Wesley team, including production, marketing, and editing people. They are not only highly skilled, but also extremely pleasant professionals.

Finally, I especially thank Peter Gordon of Addison-Wesley, a truly wise man, for his support and patience. He is a genuine friend of the author.
