The Discovery and Exploration Phases

Even when your site is in the conceptual phase, you need to evaluate the needs of the customer to validate or invalidate site goals, messages, and rough designs. Proper testing at this phase helps guarantee that a bigger, more expensive reworking will not be required later. Online research is especially valuable for quickly testing goals and messages with large numbers of prospective customers. Online research can also let you test your rough designs with a diverse population, rather than with only the customers you can find locally. The better online research solutions (see Section E.6, Comparison of Commercial Tools) can provide both the market research capability to validate product concepts, priorities, and goals, and the usability research capability to help you refine design roughs.
