Limits of Prototyping

There are some downsides to using prototypes. Many people believe that creating prototypes takes time away from building the actual site. Take care to explain the value of creating and testing rapid prototypes. In addition, although prototypes are useful for getting some kinds of information, they are not as effective for others, such as estimating download speeds and quality of customer service. Finally, when using medium- and high-fidelity prototypes, you have to manage expectations. Seeing something that looks and feels like it is working can make customers and clients think that the site is almost done. Take the time to explain that the prototypes still represent early stages of design, and that things are still open to change.
