H8 CONTEXT-SENSITIVE HELP

Greyling, T . (1998, May) Fear and loathing of the help menu: A usability test of online help. Technical Communication Online, 45(2): 168–179. (http://www.techcomm-online.org/issues/v45n2/full/0267.html)
This article reports results of a usability test on an online help system. None of the findings are especially surprising: People avoid using online help systems, read any help information hastily, leave quickly if they don't think they're on the right help page, and ignore broad overviews. However, the testers did find that, for their specific application, people liked online help that was context specific and relevant to the current task. They also found that people liked help that was obvious and just one mouse click away.
